San Romanoway Revitalization After School Program
Let’s Talk Science is a charitable organization that provides education and outreach services to support youth development. Engaging in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) both in and out of school allows young people to develop important problem-solving skills, creativity, resilience building and innovative thinking skills that they need for the future. Let’s Talk Science has 48 outreach sites across Canada, and 43% of Canadian schools used their programs.
As part of the Foundation’s preventative mental health strategy, AMDF supports Let’s Talk Science’s afterschool program at San Romanoway Revitalization Association. This program brings after-school STEM activities to youth in the Jane & Finch neighbourhood. Populations with lower incomes and lower levels of education tend to face higher levels of mental illness. STEM education can help youth to develop problem-solving, critical thinking and teamwork skills, which will benefit them inside the classroom and can foster strategies to aid in coping with life obstacles, such as poor mental health.
“Students at SRRA are recognizing the connection between STEM activities and the world around them, whether it is a baker measuring ingredients or learning to code and design computer games.”
