Musical Stage Compaany

Make Me a Song

The Musical Stage Company is the largest not-for-profit musical theatre company in Canada, committed to cultivating experiences –onstage and off –that transform lives, build empathy and create community through musical theatre. The organization also offers robust education programs to develop the artists and audiences of tomorrow, providing musical theatre training to over 200 young people each year at no cost to participants.

AMDF supports one of these programs–Make Me a Song–under our youth mental health strategy. Make Me a Song provides 80 youth from two of Toronto’s priority Neighbourhood Improvement Areas (Regent Park and Jane & Finch) with free weekly choir lessons using a curriculum of songs created by Musical StageCompany’s composers and lyricists. The program is presented in partnership with the Regent Park School of Music. Through performances, artistic expression and mentorship, youth can develop a sense of community, relationship-building abilities and problem-solving skills that will help them to develop a foundation for success. Make Me a Song allows young people to cultivate skills and foster personal qualities, such as resilience, that help them to overcome barriers.

"It is always an honour to help create space for youth to share their deepest feelings and discuss how they find solace and comfort in music. The room was alive with inspiration and extremely exciting energy. The youth recognized the diversity and representation among the songwriters and that was lovely to witness. I can’t wait to hear what the composers come up with!”
