Movember

Breaking the Ice

Movember is the leading charity dedicated to changing the face of men’s health. With a singular goal to stop men dying too young, Movember supports the following causes: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

Breaking the Ice is based on Movember-funded research. It engages sporting organizations as a way to improve the mental health and resilience of young athletes.  It teaches young hockey players how to talk about mental health, get help when needed and overcome life's challenges.

WE USE THE POWER OF SPORT

The program is effective because it uses hockey to help participants acquire important skills and knowledge. The program is run at the rink to engage participants and emphasize lessons that can be taught through hockey.

WE ENGAGE ALL STAKEHOLDERS

With programs for athletes, parents and coaches, Breaking the Ice can help young hockey athletes and their support networks promote mental health, resilience and wellbeing.

WE FOCUS ON THE SKILLS YOU NEED

Breaking the Ice targets both mental health literacy and resilience. When combined, these skills can underpin mental health and wellbeing over the decades to come.

"We found that young men didn't talk about mental health with their friends. However, they thought that sport would be an engaging setting to learn about mental health. We’ve shown Breaking the Ice to be effective in increasing mental health literacy and resiliency of all who have participated. We are grateful to the Aubrey & Marla Dan Foundation for supporting Movember and young men’s mental health, through Breaking the Ice."
